Baby lotion

Advice on what to look for when choosing baby lotion plus the opportunity to purchase a range of baby lotions including organic and sensitive varieties.

Baby lotion is designed to cleanse, moisturise and protect your baby's skin. It provides an excellent alternative to baby wipes because of its moisturising properties and can be used to sooth dry skin on Mum as well as baby. (It provides an excellent alternative to stretch mark cream for Mums with sensitive skin).

Baby lotion can be used with cotton wool as a cleanser at nappy changing time or used to give baby a soothing massage to help rehydrate the skin. You should avoid using baby lotion on newborns and very young infants as the skin is still developing so it is initially better to use cotton wool and water.

Baby lotion is essentially a mixture of oil and water with additions to give it its colour and sweet smelling fragrance. Some baby lotions contain more additives than others so you should choose fragrance free alternatives if you or your baby suffers from sensitive skin (as you will have it on your hands too).

Fragrance free and organic baby lotions are becoming widely available and these can be used both for cleansing and to sooth dry skin, nappy rash and eczema.

Baby lotions vary in price, texture and how easily they are absorbed. It is best to try several to find a brand of baby lotion that you and your baby's skins are happy with.
