Pregnancy week 17

Signs of pregnancy during week 17 of being pregnant - Everyone's bump is different; you may be quite big by now or hardly showing at all.

Discuss pregnancy week 17 on our forums, right now! Or, post a comment below.

You

You may have noticed some changes in your breasts. Your nipples may have enlarged, and the skin around them (the areola) may darken. Your veins are more prominent because of the extra blood flow. Your increased blood supply to support the baby may cause nosebleeds.

If you haven't felt them already you may start to feel the first butterfly movements in the next few weeks. First time mums usually feel their babies around 18 to 20 weeks. Everyone's bump is different; you may be quite big by now or hardly showing at all. The most important thing is not to worry, and if something is bothering you, don't be afraid to ask your midwife.

Your baby

Your baby is now about the length of a pen and has her weight has doubled in the last two weeks. Your baby's cerebral cortex has started to mature and connections between the nerves and muscles are being established.

I got my h1n1 shot at 10 weeks, I felt i should get it due to alot of people around me get sick alot, and don't always like to cover thir mouth or nose. I didn't feel any pain from it what so ever and feel great. Even through morning sickness, I had nausea but didn't throw up or nothing and felt better once I ate. I am 16 weeks and 1 day prego now and this is my 1st prego experience and starting to feel little movements now. Im not quiete sure what they feel like but I was told it was like gas or butterflys and tonite I felt the first movement and its very exiting. But don't feel you shouldn't get the shot as I was nervous at 1st and after I got it I feel better now that I did. Not only for my safety but for the little one inside me.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and decided a number of weeks ago that im not touching the swine flu jab! i wish i never heard about the bloody thing! the way i see it is how many people die a year with the normal seasonal flu? the only reason swine flu seems so bad is because its constantly on the news!

My midwife told me that its when your 30 weeks onwards that it should seriously b considered! so really any of us around the 17 wks at the mo dnt need 2 panic because by the time we are 30 wks itll march-ish so flu tends to die down a bit (pun not intended!) lol

oh im showing alright. god i think im really big but my friends dont lol. this is my first. dot get me wrong i dont care how big i am lol.. roll on the bump lol. but yea to those who worry inbetween scans i would advise or reccomend buying a Doppler, i got one second hand on ebay and i swear its the best thing i bought. even had a listne to baby this morning before work and it settled me as i didnt have a listen since xmas day. so it has DEF helped me not to worry which can only be a good thing! :)

Hi,
I'm 17 weeks tomorrow and not showing too much, just looks like i had a large lunch! I was feeling fluttering at night last week, but this week i havn't felt anything, which worries me, next scan is not for several weeks, would be nice to see that it's all ok.Was being sick every morning from week 3 until now, it seems to be slowing down now, only every few days.

Hi Collette,

It's probably the mercury-based component (thiomersal) that some versions of the jab contains - it's used as a preservative. Some people are concerned that it MAY be linked to autism BUT the pharmacists and GPs that I work with explained to me that in America, when they removed mercury from some vaccines given to pregnant women and children, there was absolutely NO drop in the number of children showing signs of autism, and that if mercury had been causing any of the cases, you would have seen a drop after it was removed from the jabs. Also, you will also have some mercury in your system if you eat food such as tuna fish, and yet nobody links tuna fish to autism, and there's only an absolutely tiny amount in the jab. Personally, I think it's one of those media-led panics that you should probably not take any notice of. Hope this puts your mind at rest! :) this link may help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiomersal_controversy

P.S. - I'm 17 +2 with my first baby, and I came down with swine flu a couple of weeks ago - it completely knocked me out, but I'm fighting fit now, and the midwife confirmed a strong foetal heartbeat yesterday. I had been worried that I might have harmed my baby as I took the advice that pregnant women should not take any medication if they can help it, and had had a high temperature for 3 days before I was told that a high temperature can be really dangerous for baby - so PLEASE, if you are ill with a high temperature, take your PARACETAMOL - it lowers your fever and is safe. I feel bad that I risked my babies health, thinking I was doing the right thing, when in actual fact I was doing the complete opposite. ALL OTHER PAIN KILLERS ARE A COMPLETE NO NO THOUGH!!. Only paracetamol is safe xx

Hi everyone!!! good morning...im 17wks and 4days pregnant..my kids have gotten the flu shot and the H1N1 shot..My husband is going to get the same thing..But my doc wants me to get it..i talked to my kids nurse from school and she said that the kids are protected from the Virus but the bad thing is that they could still bring it home and give me the H1N1 virus..So im going to get the H1N1 shot but with no mercury in it..it was a hard decision to make because i have never been pregnant in the winter first time..Oh i have had the flu shot..i just dont want anything to happen..good luck everyone!!!

Hi everyone, I am 17+2 days pregnant and I got a call last week from my GPs asking me if I wanted a swine flu jab. I categoricaly said NO because it's been around only 5 minutes and THEY DON'T KNOW YET how will it affect any unborn babies. My baby can't decide for himself so I made the decision not have it done. I remember in 60-s or around that time they gave pregnant woman a medication for something and all of them had something wrong with their babies. I am not saying that the decision I made would be right for everybody but it's the right decision for me and my baby. The rest is in God's hands as they say. Good luck to all new mums to be.xxx

hi lambert, im having the swine flu jab in a few weeks i think its best 2, a close friend of mine is 17 weeks also and is seriously ill through getting swine flu and being pregnant she in a critical state. i am a little worried about it but feel if there is a side effect 2 it, it would be better than getting swine flu and am sure they would have tested it on pregnant women.x.

Hi Sam1972 - I too am expecting fraternal twins at 34, 1st pregnancy am 17+1 today. I too feel massive and although had early flutters I haven't had anything for 2 weeks although all is well, one of the placenta's is in the way I think. My lower back is killing me, fine when I'm sitting but that initial getting up and first few steps are agony. Keep in touch xxx

Hi, I'm 17 weeks pregnant on Thursday. Really nervous and excited at the same time. We are having fraternal twins and this is my 1st pregnancy at 36. Gonna get a double wammy. I feel really huge and I can feel the fluttering now. Back hurts if I stop moving. Sleeping at night is not too bad yet. If anyone got any tips on twins would love to hear from you. All the best to you all xx

Hi guys I'm 17 wks pregnant too - 18 wk on Friday and this is my first. I'm 30 .Am soooooo happy after all these years its finally happened but soooo worried that something is going to go wrong. I'm a bit fatter - my clothes aren't doing up any more, but not much of a round bump and not sure if I'm feeling the baby or not - when I lie down I get this feeling like you get just before your tummy rumbles, and it seems to move slightly - anyone else feel anything like that?

i would suggest sitting with a pillow behind your back so it is arched, this works for me, don't slouch forward this makes it worse, good look.

It is normal to have the brown discharge during your pregnancy... I had it at the beginning of my pregnancy and i went to the emergency room cus i was freaked out and the doctor said it was normal. So dont worry... You would know if you were having a miscarriage, it is very painful atleast for me it was but this baby is completely healthy this time...

Hi I am 17 weeks pregnant now and this is my first baby. My first trimester wasn't so bad, I felt mostly nauseous and tired. Now I am feeling a lot better. I can stay awake throughout the day!!! Yay. Last few nights I've been having trouble sleeping, just can't get comfortable, my hips hurt and I wake up with the back pain. I find that my yoga excercises help with the back pain a lot. Also, last night I tried using my body pillow to support my back only and as my bump is still not that big I didn't use the pillow between my legs. That seemed to have helped a bit with my hips pain as I presume I wasn't stretching my hips further apart than what they needed to be yet. Hope this helps someone. Congratulations to you all.

Hello. This is my first pregnany and I am finding it alot harder than i imagined. I am over the worst sickness now and just feel bad when i am hungry. I have been getting Sciatica which is very painful and been rather emotinal. I do not have a bump yet, but i have definatly put on weight! I have felt the odd flutter which i hope is the baby and not just wishful thinking. I heard the heart beat at my Midwife appointment last week - it was amazing. i can't wait to be a Mum. However and am scared too. Congratu;ations to everyone, we are nearly half way!! XX

I am on my fourth pregnancy. The early weeks were the worst I have ever had. I had terrible sickness however, from week 12 the sickness stopped. Im looking fresh faced and healthy. I have quite a large bump for 17 weeks. I have learned that you should listen to your body, if you are tired....take a nap, if your hungry....eat straight away. Pushing your body to the limits during pregnancy is exhausting and can make you feel ill again. Pregnancy is a wonderful experience and should be enjoyed.

I'm 17 weeks today and suffering from really bad headaches! Apparently pregnant women can get them until 20 weeks due to the hormone change. Quite lucky really as I've had no sickness or anything. Started getting a bit of a bump that seems to get bigger as the days goes by! Luckily not put any weight on anywhere else yet so fingers crossed. Started swimming last week, trying to go twice a week, feel great afterwards would defiantly recommend. I haven't felt any movements yet but on the scan it was all over the place! Good luck and congratulations to you all.

I am nearly 17 weeks, and everyone thinks I am further, my bump is pretty big, I got scared I was carrying twins even though I wasn't lol, midwife just said its cause I am small height wise and quite skinny so it shows more, xD I am quite glad you can tell I am pregnant though, stops me from telling them the reasons I can't drink at xmas :P

I know how you feel Ryan22! I'm just over 16 wks with my 2nd child and I can't wait for the kicking to start as I think then i can reassure myself that all is wel if you know what i mean ?? I have started a bump but as i'm not a skinny rake to start with people are unsure although starting to guess that i am indeed pregnant. Husbands/partners do not understand and mine just says all is fine and that i'll soon wish the kicking would ease up a little. i'm not a paranoid young girl but i still have the constant fear of something going wrong. please tell me we all have that and its just a mother thing ? thanks ladies, Mandi x
