Baby nightlights

Advice on what to look for when you are buying nightlights for your baby's nursery, plus the opportunity to compare nightlight prices.

Nightlights provide a soft comforting light for your baby or child while sleeping.

Nightlights also provide you with a way of checking on your sleeping baby without turning on the room light and possibly waking your baby.

Several styles of nightlights are available including decorative lights shaped as animals or objects, and automatic nightlights that turn on in the dark and off in the light. Some plug into a socket others are lit by a nightlight candle.

A recent study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia showed that children under two years old who slept with a room light on had a five-fold increase in myopia compared to other youngsters who slept in the dark. These are however the results from only one study, you may wish to read more on the subject.

Although the study does not prove night time lighting during early childhood is a direct cause of myopia, parents may wish to consider the study when deciding whether to use a nightlight. The researchers, whose study is published in the science journal Nature said the first two years of life seemed to be a critical time in the development and focusing of the eye which can be affected by the proportions of light and dark during a 24-hour period.
