'Me time' a priority in pregnancy

Expectant mums encouraged to take time out for themselves for a healthy, happy pregnancy.
Pregnancy is a time when mothers-to-be should pamper themselves, taking every care to ensure they are as healthy as possible, one expert has advised.

Apart from visiting a doctor or healthcare professional on a regular basis, expectant mums are encouraged to take active steps to eat well, de-stress and maintain a moderate level of fitness.

Gynecologist Kingsley Mensah told the Sowetan newspaper: "Staying healthy during pregnancy depends on you, so it's crucial to arm yourself with information about the many ways to keep you and your baby as healthy as possible."

He added that women are advised to be extra aware of what they consume during pregnancy. While the correct nutrient intake is essential for the growing baby, mums-to-be should avoid toxic substances such as cigarette smoke, certain medicines and alcohol.

Light exercise like swimming, walking or yoga are beneficial to mother and baby and can also help alleviate stress, which can worsen symptoms including nausea, tiredness, indigestion and backache.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the number of live births has been increasing since 2001 and has now reached the highest level since 1991, when there were 699,217 live births, suggesting improved pregnancy health awareness.
