Formula milk

Advice on what to look for when choosing baby formula milk plus the opportunity to purchase a range of cows, organic and soya formula milk products.

Discuss formula milk on our forums, right now! Or, post a comment below.

Formula milk is made from cow's milk and is designed to be as much like breast milk as possible. Formula contains elements essential to your baby's heath such as fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. Some also have long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) added which are believed to boost brain development.

There are many formulas to choose from and which you choose depend on your preference, and your baby's as each formula tastes slightly different. Even the containers and packaging could sway your choice, some are sold in resealable bags, others in tins with resealable lids.

Formula comes in powder form, or ready made in cartons. Tins or boxes of powdered formula are the most economical, but cartons are ideal for outings or emergencies.

Most manufacturers make first and second stage milk. First stage, made from whey, is most like breast milk, so best for newborns and young babies. Second stage milk, casin-based, is designed for hungrier babies and takes longer to digest. Although suitable from birth the protein isn't as close to breast milk as that found in first stage milk.

Follow on milk can be given from six months, containing extra iron, which your baby will need by this age.

Soya formula is used for babies allergic to cow's milk. It is high in sugar and not suitable for all babies. Never switch formula without consulting with your health visitor. If your baby does have allergies you can get alternative milk on prescription.

There is a vast array for formula milk available. It is worth thinking about you and your baby's needs before you buy and perhaps speaking with other mums.

I'd like to use organic formula milk but I'm not sure that the Hipp Organic one that's available in supermarkets includes some of the things that my health visitor has said I should look out for eg probiotics and LCPs. Has anyone else come across a good organic formula?
