Booster cushions

Advice on purchasing a booster cushion for your child, plus the opportunity to purchase a range of baby car safety seats.
As of the 18th September, 2006, it is now illegal for a child under 12 years of age or under 135 cm (approx. 5') to travel in a vehicle without being fitted with an appropriate child restraint. For this reason, it is worth purchasing a quality booster cushion as it is likely to be used for a long time. Booster cushions are categorised as group 3 child restraints and tend to be suitable for children between 6 and 12 years of age (22-36kg / 48-79lbs).

Booster cushions raise your child up so that a regular passenger seat belt can be used to restrain them - they do not come with an integral harness. Most booster cushions consist of a plastic base covered in a removable or wipable cover and are fitted with slots that direct you where to guide the seat belt.

As booster cushions do not have their own restraints it is essential that the seat belt is fitted properly and securely. Booster cushions should be used with a 3 point seat belt unless the manufacturers instructions clearly state that they can be used with a lap strap. Because of their simple design, booster cushions tend to be very light and can be moved easily from car to car.

When fitting a seat belt accross a child on a booster seat you should ensure that the strap lies flat and is not twisted and sits accross the top of the thighs and shoulder as opposed to the stomach and neck - this will help to minimise injury in the event of an accident. Additionally, you should ensure that you correctly position the belt around the seat as per the manufacturers instructions.

It is prefereable to seat your child in the rear of the car, however if this is not possible you should enure that when in the front seat, they are as far away from the dashboard as possible. Additionally, you should avoid purchasing second hand booster cushions unless you can be sure of their history.
