Baby back carriers

Useful information on what to look for when choosing a baby back carrier plus the opportunity to purchase a range of baby and toddler back carriers.

Discuss baby back carriers on our forums, right now! Or, post a comment below.

A baby back carrier, is usually either made from soft fabric or is framed. You wear them on your back with straps over your shoulders much like you would a backpack.

Baby back carriers are a fantastically versatile and comfortable way of transporting your baby. They enable baby to see the world around them, interact at adult height so that they get lots of attention and have the reassurance of being able to see and feel Mum or Dad. However, these carriers should only be used for infants over the age of six months and only when your baby can support her own head, as back carriers provide little in the way of neck support.

They are very easy to put on and off, relatively small to transport and particularly useful if you do a lot of walking. Baby back carriers really come into their own in situations when it is difficult to use a pushchair, such as when you go shopping, travel on public transport or walk across uneven surfaces.

Ensure you choose a model with adjustable straps so that the carrier fits snugly against your body. Back back carriers that are fitted with a waistband can be a good idea, especially if you suffer with a bad back as they help to prevent strain.

Questions to ask before you buy your back facing baby carrier:

Comfortable for you?

Choose a carrier that has adjustable padded shoulder straps for maximum comfort and so that both you and your partner can comfortably carry your baby.

Comfortable for baby?

Check that the baby carrier is soft and comfortable for your baby, that the carrier is designed to facilitate an ergonomically correct seated position for your baby and that your baby can be securely fastened into the carrier.

Can you put it on by yourself?

Unless you always have help, ensure you can put the baby carrier on yourself - many find framed back carriers easier in this respect.

Is it washable?

Your baby carrier is unlikely to stay clean for long so ensure that you can either wash the whole carrier or at least the major fabric components of the carrier, or that it is wipeable.

Do you like the look of the baby carrier?

You will probably wear the baby carrier a lot so choose a design and colour you (and your partner) like.
